Kimo Te Whare Ponga Moko was born near Whāingaroa, raised in Raglan, and is currently Pou 6 in Te Whare Tū Taua o Aotearoa, an official Māori martial art. After learning from the right people, he is bringing this art form home to help grow a new generation of kairākau in Whāingaroa.
Kia ora whānau, my name is Kimo Te Whare Ponga Moko. I was born 50km away from Whāingaroa in Waikato Hospital and brought up here in Whāingaroa.
I am Pou 6 in an official Māori martial art of Aotearoa named Te Whare Tū Taua o Aotearoa, where it only goes up to Pou 8. Pou 8 is equivalent to a black belt in karate. If I am Pou 6, how many levels until I reach Pou 8?
Growing up here in Raglan for most of my youth years, and out of all the times going back to the pā, this art form was not seen on our marae ātea.
After having the chance to go out and indulge in the appropriate kai from the correct people, I now want to come home and grow a new generation of kairākau.
